Skin cancer is one of the deadliest diseases affecting people in the United States. It has been particularly on the rise in the country in the recent years. The inherent cause of skin cancer is the formation of malignant tissues in the skin cells. Usually people with light colored hair and skin tend to be affected by this disease. A lot of exposure to the heat of the Sun can also be a reason for people to get affected. In certain cases, it does come because of hereditary factors in only of the family members.
Skin cancers can be invariably classified as basal skin cancer, squamous skin cancer and melanoma. Melanoma is a very lethal kind of skin cancer, but is not as prevalent as basal and squamous skin cancers. People are commonly diagnosed with basal and squamous skin cancers. Signs of skin cancer can be of different types. Abnormal growth on the skin, moles that bleed and change in size, dry skin with colored patches, scaly lumps and pimples that do not disappear can be possible signs of skin cancer. The practice is that a biopsy is done and is required to confirm the existence of the disease in the person. When a doctor suspects skin cancer, he recommends a biopsy.
Once the cancer is diagnosed, the doctor checks, what kind of skin cancer the patient is affected with. He also takes into account the stage at which it is diagnosed. He also checks where it is spread on the body and how deeply it has spread. The patients' medical record is also checked.
There are various treatment options for skin cancer. They are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, Photodynamic therapy and biologic therapy. Surgery is considered to be a viable treatment option. There are various kinds of surgeries namely excisional skin surgery, Mohs surgery, curettage and electrodesiccation and topical chemotherapy. In the excisional skin surgery treatment, the doctor makes the skin numb and removes the tumor. Some area of the skin surrounding the tumor is also removed, depending on the thickness and size of the tumor. All types of skin cancers can be treated with excisional skin surgery. Mohs surgery involves shaving layers of the skin after making the skin numb. This is done until no more cancer cells remain and this can be confirmed using a microscope. Mohs surgery and curettage typically suits basal and squamous kind of skin cancers. Curettage and electrodesiccation, is a quick and effective method. The doctor deadens the treatment area and uses a tool or a curette to remove the cancer. This is followed by passing of electric current in the affected area to prevent bleeding and destroy remaining cancer cells. Topical chemotherapy suits all skin cancers other than melanoma. The topical creams miquimod (IMQ) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) fight cancer cells. IMQ stimulates the immune system and kills cancer cells. 5FU inhibits rapidly dividing cells from growing.
