A Hybrid ? Or Hybridomas

Author: Alex Howard

When speaking of Hybridomas in the perspective biology, you might know nothing about it.
However, many people might have watched a popular TV series The Vampire Diaries or The
Originals, you might love the evil Klaus as I do, who is a vampire/werewolf hybrid. I've also
memorized the word when I see the word hybridomas.

As a matter of fact, hybridoma is kind like Klaus. It is a hybrid of two other different types of
cells (different like a vampire and a werewolf), which is known as B lymphocytes and
myelomacells. In some scientific laboratories, monoclonal antibodies are produced on the
basis of hybridomas. It is realized because a B lymphocyte and a myeloma cell can
hybridize a hybridoma cell which has a capacity to produce monoclonal antibodies.
Generally, in a given sample, the hybridized monoclonal antibodies mean that all antibodies
have come from the same B lymphocyte, and are thus identical. In practice, monoclonal
antibodies are very useful in biological research, for they can be used to identify and isolate
cellular proteins, and they are also currently used in diagnostic techniques, including
pregnancy tests and drug assays, as well as in some tests for detecting viral and bacterial in
fections and cancer.

The hybridoma technology begun in the 1970s. However, among so many biotechnology
companies, Creative Diagnostics produces the world's most comprehensive list of research-
use Hybridomas. Some hybridomas in Creative Diagnostics collection are somatic cell hybrid
s. These cells are capable of producing immunoglobulins that are specific for viral, bacterial
or cellular targets.
This collection comprises over 500 monoclonal antibodysecreting hybridomas.
The specification of the secreted antibodies covers a wide range of
antigens including bacterial and viral, major histocompatibility complex, differentiation,
oncogenes, plant and immunoglobulin. All cell lines added to the collection undergo full
quality control and authentication procedures. Cell lines can be supplied either as frozen
or growing cultures.
